Challenge
- Syringe client wanted to avoid NCRs from sub-component defects
- For the barrel – parting lines and moulding knit lines were difficult to distinguish from faults such as core pin scratches
- For the plunger head – the near-opaque plunger head was difficult to inspect for 2D and 3D tolerance and internal defects
- Inspection was to be 100% at high speed
Solution
- Vision lab trials and gage R&R studies used to optimize optics
- Optimum solution for barrel faults – wide angle lens viewing barrel ID, barrel in custom designed light nest, long wavelength light to avoid polymer “glow”
- Optimum solution for plunger head faults – 2D metrology with low intensity backlight, 3D metrology with structured laser light, high intensity backlight for internal voids
Technologies integrated
- Industry-leading vision laboratory
- High-end PC based vision analysis with MAVIX GUI, part tracking and data archiving
- High speed material handling of both rigid and elastomeric parts
